The Department of English was established in 1978 with Part II English. The B.A Degree Course in English Literature was started in 1979. The Self–Financing course UG- B.A English was introduced in 2010. In 2011 the starting of M.A English Literature was an important Phase in the development of the department. An additional section in B.A English Self – financing Course was introduced in 2012. It also offers a Certificate Course in Spoken English for its undergraduate students. The Phoenix Literary Association enriches students’ talents by organizing seminars and conducting competitions. Besides Curriculum the department has its clubs, Swan Debating Club, Talking Club and Reading Club to develop the skills of students. The Digital Language Lab is utilized by students to improve their communication skills, there are 80 headsets with a computer and Audio recording system, table mikes, cordless mikes, an LCD projector, 30 cassettes and 41 CDs on Spoken English. The department nurtures theatre arts through “Indraz Playhouse'' and has succeeded in staging plays for the past four years. The department is actively involved in research by publishing books, articles in journals and conducting seminars. It promotes research in the areas of British Literature, Indian Writing in English, New Literatures in English, Commonwealth Literatures, and Literatures in Translation, ELT and Comparative Literature.
